Female gun ownership has been on the rise in the United States. It’s one of the most rapidly growing segments of American firearms ownership.
During 2020, amid the pandemic, civil unrest over social justice issues, and a contested election, more people bought guns—and most were women, according to recent news reports. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health research found that women accounted for about half of all gun purchses between 2019 and 2021, and that new gun owners are more likely to be female, VOA News cited.
While firearm sales were soaring in 2022, FBI reported that an increasing number of women are now buying guns. After conducting more than a 28million firearms background checks they found that 40 percent of gun sales in a recent year were women.
Why women are buying guns
Women are buying more guns than ever. According to recent statistics, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of women purchasing firearms in recent years.
Here are the top three reasons why women are purchasing more guns:
Self-defense
In the past, women have been reluctant to purchase guns for fear of being taken advantage of or becoming targets of violence. However, this is changing as women are realizing that they need to take steps to protect themselves and their families.
According to a study by LIMRA, women are purchasing firearms for self-defense at higher rates than ever before.
The study found that 68% of women who purchased a firearm in the past year reported they did so for personal protection. This number is up from 52% in 2011, and it’s an all-time high.
The survey also revealed that 40% of women who own a gun say they purchased it because they felt unsafe in their community or neighborhood—a rate that has also risen since 2011 when only 29% said this was why they owned a weapon.
Training or shooting as a hobby
The number of women who own guns has been on the rise for years, but a recent survey shows that women’s interest in shooting ranges at an all-time high. The executive director of A Girl and A Gun (AGAG) Women’s Shooting League is noticing that women are showing up to shoot more than ever before.
According to a survey conducted by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), women are more likely than ever to own a gun. This is true even though they make up just over one-third of the population. The NSSF also found that women are now as likely as men to be interested in shooting range activities; 21% of them said they’d like to attend a shooting range in the next year. (The NSSF surveyed nearly 4,000 adults.)
To be Independent
Women are buying more guns because they want to be independent.
Women who own guns say they feel safer because they don’t need men around all the time; they can protect themselves if something happens and they don’t want to rely on anyone else for protection. Of course, there are other reasons women might want to own guns—like hunting or sport shooting—but most of them also say that owning a gun is part of how they want to feel free and independent from men who might try to control them.
Women increasingly talk about owning guns on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. They also discuss gun rights issues more openly than men do, according to Pew Research Center’s study on Women and Guns: Trends from Pew Research Center Surveys of American Adults.

Less Superficial, More Practical
Gun companies are now doing much more than just making superficial appeals to female shooters.
Ten years ago, it was a “pink it and shrink it” mentality when it came to product development. The idea was that if you want to appeal to women, you have to make something pink and make it small enough so that they can carry it in their purses or pocket.
However, this is no longer the case. Gun companies are now doing much more than just making superficial appeals to female shooters. They are making guns that are designed from the ground up with women in mind. For example:
-Handguns that have an extended grip to accommodate smaller hands and arms without sacrificing accuracy or power
-Long guns with longer grips so women can shoot them better
-Slide locks that allow for quick reloads without having to take off your gloves or put down your drink
Black Women Represent a Growing Share of US Gun Owners
According to the most recent data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, black women are more likely to own guns than their white counterparts. In fact, about half of all black women between the ages of 18 and 34 have a gun in their home—a rate that’s more than double that of white women.
A recent study by Northeastern University found that “black Americans are less likely to commit violent crimes than whites or Hispanics,” but they are more likely to use guns to defend themselves from those crimes.
An estimated 3 million more people purchased firearms in 2020 than did in 2019, and nearly 1.5 million more people became new gun owners over that period, according to the National Firearms Survey. Nearly half of the new gun owners were women and a fifth of those were Black, according to the survey. A separate survey by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, an industry trade group, found that 87% of sellers reported an increase in Black women purchasers in the first half of 2021.
